What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins, also known as broken capillaries, are damaged blood vessels that are located just below the skin’s surface. Spider veins are typically blue, purple, or red in color and may be visible in areas of the body such as the face, chest, hands, thighs, calves, and ankles.

While generally harmless, spider veins can often lead to cosmetic insecurities that leave many patients feeling self-conscious. Luckily, at The Aurora DeJuliis European Medical Spa, we provide effective laser treatment that makes eliminating the appearance of spider veins easy.

What Causes Spider Veins in the Face?

Spider veins can be caused by a number of factors, including:

Heredity: Spider veins can be caused by genetics and may appear on the skin later in life.

Pregnancy: Due to the increase in estrogen hormones during pregnancy, blood vessels can be broken, causing the appearance of spider veins.

Rosacea: In addition to redness on the face, broken blood vessels may appear more noticeable.

Sun exposure: Without proper protection from the sun, conditions such as sunburn or sun damage can enhance the appearance of blood vessels on the face.

Facial injury: Trauma and injury to the head or face may lead to bruising and broken blood vessels.

Alcohol: Drinking alcohol can cause skin blushing, which, like rosacea, can make the appearance of spider veins on the face more noticeable.

Vomiting or sneezing: Pressure that can occur in the face during vomiting or sneezing can break blood vessels in the skin, leading to spider veins.

How Are Spider Veins on the Face Treated?

Spider veins on the face can be easily corrected using our state-of-the-art lasers. Dr. Aurora DeJuliis provides two methods to eliminate their appearance:

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL):

With IPL, laser light technology is used to penetrate the second layer of the skin with only one wavelength. Doing so does not harm the top layer of the skin. This technique allows the laser to release light in different wavelengths at the layer of the skin where blood vessels and veins appear. Pigment cells in the skin will absorb the light energy and convert it to heat, eliminating the appearance of noticeable capillaries and veins on the face.

YAG Laser:

Using the YAG laser, the appearance of spider veins can be eliminated by light energy that targets oxyhemoglobin in red blood cells. This process allows energy to be transferred through blood vessels so that they no longer function, resulting in the disappearance of red, blue, or purple-colored veins.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Vein Removal Treatment?

Ideal candidates for laser vein removal, either with IPL or the YAG laser, are patients looking to eliminate the appearance of broken capillary veins or spider veins on their face, chest, and hands. If you are bothered by the cosmetic appearance of noticeable veins, you will likely benefit from laser vein removal treatment. Ideal candidates should be able to maintain realistic expectations regarding their results.

Are There Any Risks with Spider Vein Removal?

Like any other laser treatment, spider vein removal can include potential risks, such as the following:

  • Bruising
  • Blistering
  • Scarring
  • Changes in skin color

While these risks are rare, patients can expect high-quality treatment from Dr. DeJuliis, who prioritizes comfort and safety with each procedure. Under her care, patients will be able to manage common side effects and avoid risks from laser vein removal.

What Is Recovery from Laser Vein Removal Like?

After treatment, you may experience redness, bruising, or swelling in the treated area. However, these common side effects typically disappear within one to two weeks. Your treated spider veins may appear even darker in color at first before they begin to fade. While each patient’s recovery experience will differ, most can notice an improvement in their skin’s appearance within a month.

How Long Do the Results Last?

After treatment, you can expect the appearance of treated spider veins to lighten up as early as two to ten days, but most patients will typically see an overall disappearance of their veins over the course of several weeks. Results from spider vein removal treatment can last between three to five years. However, it’s important to note that new spider veins may appear again in the future. To prevent this, patients can avoid alcohol, stay hydrated, and use sunscreen daily to protect their skin.
