Everything You Need To Know About Chemical Peels

From improving sun damage to acne scars and even reclaiming faces from wrinkles, chemical peels have been utilized as potent and easy skincare solutions. Yet, despite being widely used for over 60 years, most people don’t know enough about them. If you’re wondering how chemical peels work, what they’re used for, and what to expect when you get one, then keep reading!

How Chemical Peels Work

Chemical peels involve applying a solution, which is typically acidic, to the skin — but this should not cause fear or worry. After all, acids can be found everywhere, including fruit.

There are three levels of chemical peels; mild or superficial, medium, and deep. Each has its respective uses, but the general science and technique remain the same.

The Science Behind Chemical Peels

In a superficial peel, the solution lowers the pH of the skin which loosens the connection between the top, dead layer of skin and the healthy skin below. This exfoliates the face to encourage new cell growth which leads to a fresher, tighter look.

In medium peels, an acid called trichloroacetic acid is used which helps the solution penetrate even deeper than a superficial peel. As more layers of the skin are encouraged to turnover, this leads to an even longer-lasting, youthful appearance.

Deep peels penetrate the deepest of all chemical peels with the use of phenols. They have the strongest and longest-lasting effects and work best against deep wrinkles, scarring, or facial growths.

Do Chemical Peels Hurt?

Nope! With superficial and medium peels, you can expect some tingling, tightness, or even a change in temperature in the face; but pain should not be expected. However, given the strength of deep peels, a greater discomfort can be expected.

But you can un-crease that brow, Dr. DeJuliis will be monitoring your entire experience and be in constant communication to ensure the process is as smooth as your face will be!

Who Should Get a Chemical Peel?
