Microneedling Treatment with PRP in Montclair, NJ

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as Stem Cell Facial or a Vampire Facial when combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), is an effective technique for skin rejuvenation and can improve aged sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, smokers lines around lips, skin tightening and rejuvenation, large pores, hair loss, stretch marks, and scars.

Microneedling for hair loss,  or alopecia areata, has been used with encouraging results. Stretch marks, acne scars, and under eye bags and discoloration can be treated extremely well with microneedling due to its ability to stimulate new collagen fibers.

Used in conjunction with PRP, microneedling is very good for melasma and dark circles as it has a ‘blanching’ effect and breaks up skin pigmentation by suppressing the production of melanocytes.

Stretch marks can benefit from microneedling using PRP and RF (radiofrequency) energy in order to stimulate new collagen fibers. Multiple sessions are needed to achieve tangible results.

Microneedling Pen

The microneedling pen uses micro needles to make tiny openings in the skin and stimulate collagen production. For better results, Dr DeJuliis uses the patient’s own stem cells (or PRP) that are obtained after a simple blood drawing done in the comfort and privacy of her Medical Spa. Scientific research has shown that when stem cells are applied to the skin after creating the micro channels, the patient can see better and faster results.

"Awesome! Dr. DeJuliis really is awesome & thorough. She’s extremely knowledgeable and tailors treatments according to your skin type. My face is improving so much since it’s been in her care. I had some sun spots and old scarring that I wanted treated & literally have seen dramatic results in a weeks timeframe. Her products are also some of the best I’ve used. Her limited face wash is gentle but very cleansing. My daily skin regimen consists of advanced protection spf 30, vitamin c & sage and citrus moisturizer. Which are great for my skin might I add. Highly, highly, highly recommend her as a doctor and her products. She is amazing & has given me back my face."

Microneedling Without Stem Cells

Microneedling can also be performed without using stem cells for patients who do not wish to have, or feel uncomfortable with, a blood drawing.

When using a microneedling pen, the treatment can feel like small pricks on the skin. Because Dr DeJuliis can regulate the depth of needle, the sensation can vary. Some discomfort can be felt for scars but over all, the treatment is very well tolerated, with little to no downtime. Make-up can be applied two to three hours after the procedure if desired.

When can I expect results from microneedling?

Significant results can be seen in six to eight weeks.

Patients will require a number of treatments, based on the skin concern. The average number is three to four treatments, one every three weeks. Acne scars and stretch marks need more sessions, on average five or six.

Sun block effective against UVB and UVA rays is a must after each microneedling treatment.

Medical microneedling is performed by a physician and is no comparison to similar treatments done in a spa by an aesthetician or with at-home microneedling devices.

For those patients who would like to combine skin tightening via radio-frequency (RF) with microneedling, then Vivace might be an option. DrD tailors all treatments based on the patient’s desired outcome and can advise if Vivace is a better treatment option.

Microneedling for Acne Scars

Acne is a common and frustrating concern. If you are dealing with acne and its effects, collagen-induction therapy may be a good fit. Know that microneedling can be used between breakout episodes (when you don’t have active acne) to promote healthy and clear skin. However, you may be asked to postpone your appointment if you are currently battling stubborn blemishes. Microneedling can spread acne bacteria across the treatment area and make matters worse. It’s a good idea to manage your acne with alternative methods, such as a laser skin treatment or professional skin care products, before considering a microneedling treatment with or without PRP. That said, microneedling is a gold standard treatment for the scars acne leaves behind.

Microneedling triggers powerful wound healing and rejuvenation responses within your skin. The collagen generated as a result of microneedling can help fill in depressed or atrophic acne scars. The treatment can also have a positive impact on post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Many patients notice an improvement in the texture and tone of their skin after microneedling sessions.

Microneedling FAQs

How does microneedling work?

The microneedling process involves the creation of small holes or micro injuries in the top layer of your skin. This helps to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, resulting in the creation of new collagen and elastin. As a result, your skin is rejuvenated, with a firmer, smoother appearance.

What skin concerns can microneedling treat?

Microneedling can be used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, including

  • Acne and other skin scarring
  • Wrinkles and fine lines on the face, neck and legs
  • Stretch marks and sun damage
  • Sagging or loose skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Loose, thin or wrinkled skin
  • Uneven skin tone or discoloration

Is there anything to do to prepare for my microneedling treatment?

Although this is a minimally invasive procedure, it’s still important that you prepare for your treatment to ensure the best possible results.

  • For starters, if you have any breakouts or conditions like hives, cold sores, allergic reactions, etc. you should not have the procedure.
  • Try to avoid exposure to sunlight for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment, or wear sunscreen if you need to be outdoors.
  • Avoid retinoids and acid-based skincare products as they can cause skin irritation before and after your treatment.
  • If you are on blood thinners, you may have to stop the medication temporarily.
  • On the day of your treatment, wash with a gentle cleanser and don’t apply makeup, lotions, perfume, etc. Arrive with a fresh face.

How soon will I see results?

Most patients who have undergone microneedling treatment see results in as little as 24-72 hours. Although these initial results will fade, typically within 2-4 weeks your true results will be visible, depending on the speed of new collagen production. During this period you’ll notice that your skin is firmer or more supple.

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on how severe your skin condition is and how you respond to each treatment. For example, uneven skin tone, blemishes and dark spots will likely need only one or two treatments to help you achieve your desired result. However, deep scarring may require multiple visits. The doctor will help you determine the ideal treatment plan for your skin concern.

Can you get microneedling while pregnant?

Pregnant women have to avoid many popular cosmetic treatments, whether due to a known risk of adverse effects or simply because there is limited data about the safety of the treatment during pregnancy. Microneedling with PRP and traditional microneedling are on this list of services to postpone while carrying a child. After all, pregnancy can cause changes to the skin, including pigmentation issues, sensitivity, and other side effects. These changes may be worsened by a microneedling treatment. Talk to our provider for personalized recommendations on pregnancy-safe skin treatments that can help you look and feel your best during this time.

Is microneedling at home as effective?

At-home microneedling tools do not compare to professional devices in terms of safety or effectiveness. In-office microneedling treatments are performed with medical devices that are regulated by the FDA. The FDA has cleared certain professional microneedling devices to improve the appearance of facial acne scars, facial wrinkles, and other common skin conditions.

Meanwhile, the FDA has not authorized any microneedling medical devices for over-the-counter sale. The tools that can be purchased for at-home use, such as dermal rollers, have shorter and blunter needles. These needles can cause side effects such as bruising, inflammation, and scarring, especially when used incorrectly. They are also not likely to be long enough to stimulate significant collagen remodeling or create a noticeable improvement in skin concerns.

For these reasons, microneedling or collagen induction treatments should only be performed by an experienced healthcare provider. Professional microneedling services provide the most reliable benefits and can be complemented with add-ons such as PRP.
