Tear trough is defined as a crease between the lower eye lid and the upper cheek area. In some people tear trough can be genetic but older individuals comprise the largest group of patients that develop tear trough because with aging we lose facial volume and the facial fat pads break down creating a well defined crease under the eye lid. This can make the individuals look like they have dark circles under the eyes and it can accentuate the aging process.
Dermal fillers, especially the ones made of hyaluronic acid, when injected by well trained medical providers can greatly improve the appearance of the tear trough.
Hyaluronic acid is a gel that has the ability to absorb water and once injected into the skin can plum up the area adding some volume and making skin lines and creases less noticeable.
Although there are many products on the market, the FDA has approved Juvederm Volbella for tear trough injections.
Volbella is the lighter filler of the Juvederm line of products.

Is this procedure painful?
Injections in the tear trough are basically painless. For sensitive patients Dr. Aurora De Juliis uses a topical anesthetic cream.
How long does the filler last?
Volbella can last up to twelve months or more depending on the patient ‘s inner system to break down fillers.
Who is a candidate for tear trough injections?
Every patient should have a medical consultation before the procedure since not everyone is a good candidate for the injections.
The ideal patient has moderate sagging under the eyes, has healthy skin and is in good health.
Also, it is important that the patient understands that tear trough correction with fillers is not surgery and the results are intended to gently filling the crease under the eyes and make patients look refreshed.
How much does the procedure cost?
The average cost of tear trough injections can range from $600 per syringe up to $1,500 depending on the product used.
Recommendations before the injections:
- Avoid taking Aspirin, non steroidal anti-inflammatories such as: Advil, Motrin.
- After the procedure we advise not to exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
- Apply cold compresses to the area on and off for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid sleeping on your face for 24 hours.
